The FIRST Rabbit Zodiac stamps was issued in 
1951 by the Japan Post. The stamps featuring a 
young girl wearing kimono hugging her rabbit pet.
At that time Japan was the only country that 
issued stamps on zodiac.

There have been various explanations of why the 
Vietnamese, unlike all other countries who follow 
the Chinese lunar calendar, have the cat
 instead of the Rabbit as a zodiac animal. 

Some explain that the old Chinese ancient word for 
Rabbit "卯" pronounce as “Mao”, which sounds like 
“Meo” in Vietnamese, where it means Cat, was the 
reason why the Vietnamese had changed the 
Rabbit sign from the original Chinese zodiac to Cat. 






  As usual, Liechtenstein Post issued their 
"Year of the Rabbit" souvenir sheet in Chinese 
paper cutting created from the most up to date 
laser technology.  The sheet of four stamps 
which is in red with gold hot stamping 
symbolizing for good luck, and cut in the 
shape of Rabbit.

Rabbit appeared in many legend, folk tales and 
perhaps the most famous one is the cartoon 
character "Bugs Bunny" 

One of the most famous fables "Hare and 
Tortoise Race" appeared on stamps from 
various countries.
